May/Jun. 1956
Completed in the late Spring of 1956 and retained by the
Scuderia Ferrari as a Factory Team Car.
Jun. 9, 1956
Steering box dated.
Jun. 24, 1956
Entered along with all three of the Touring bodied 500TRs
in the Fourth running of the Supercortemaggiore Grand Prix at Monza by
the Scuderia Ferrari Factory Team. Driven by Olivier Gendebien and the
Marquis de Portago wearing race No. 65. Gendebein and Portago
finished fourth overall. For reasons unknown, the front Borrani wire
wheels of the car were painted red. This would become a trademark
signature of this particular car throughout it’s active race career.
(A detailed description of this race can be found in Antoine Prunet’s
book, Ferrari Sports Racing and Prototypes Competition Cars, pages 138
and 140. Further mention and credit for this race can be found in the
1956 Ferrari Factory Yearbook.)
Late Jun. 1956 Sold by the Scuderia Ferrari to Luigi Chinetti’s Ferrari
dealership, New York, NY. USA. Then either sold or loaned to John
Edgar for Carroll Shelby to use in the upcoming SCCA Beverly,
Massachusetts airport race. (Chinetti may have already previously
sold the car to Temple Buel of Denver, Colorado for use by Masten
Gregory.)
Jul. 7, 1956
One of two Ferraris entered by John Edgar for Carroll
Shelby in the SCCA Beverly Airport Sports Car Races and assigned the
race No. 444. The car was on hand for Shelby (still fitted with the red
front wheels from the Monza race) but not driven, possably as result
of the problems with Buel/Edgar’s ownership. (The 1956 Ferrari Yearbook does however list Shelby as the 2-liter class winner at this
race going as far as to show a picture of Shelby and the car wearing
race No. 444.)
Jul. 19, 1956
Entered by John Edgar / Luigi Chinetti and raced by
Carroll Shelby in the Brynfan Tyddyn, Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania open
road race. Wearing race No.128, Shelby scored a 1st place finish. The
car still retained as it would for almost all of it’s known races the
trademark red painted front wheels. Both Shelby, Edgar and Chinetti
attended the race and post race celebrations. (A detailed description
of this race can be found in the September 1956 issue of Road & Track
Magazine, page 16 & 17.) During the race Chinetti was actively seeking
interest in perspective buyers for these new Testa Rossas.
Photographs of 0652 MDTR, Shelby and Chinetti are pictured in Tom
Burnside’s book, American Racing on pages 15, 20, 21, 22 and 23.
Then Acquired by Temple Buel of Denver, Colorado for Masten Gregory of
Topeka, Kansas to use in SCCA National and regional races. (Buel had
apparently already purchased and paid for the car and had been expecting
a new vehicle.)
Sept. 2, 1956 Entered by Temple Buel and raced by Masten Gregory in the
East Thompson, Connecticut Raceway SCCA races. Wearing race No. 7,
Gregory scored a lap record and an outright 1st place overall victory in
the preliminary race. In the main event, Gregory still wearing race No.
7 scored a 1st in class and a third overall. (All of the photos from
this race clearly depict the car with the red front painted wheels.)
Mid Sept. 1956 Believed to have then been shipped to Temple Buel and
entered by him in the Casper Airport Races being held in Casper,
Wyoming. Buel apparently used the car in practice however for the race
driving duties were turned over to verteran Colorado Ferrari racer,
Dabney Collins. It is not known at this time how Collins wearing race
No. 11 finished the race.
Then Shipped to Sacramento, California and entered by Temple Buel in
the upcoming Road Races.
Sept. 30, 1956 Driven by Masten Gregory wearing race No. 73 in the
Sacramento Road Races. Gregory took an immediate second place in
the opening stages of the race just behind race leader Lou Brero Sr. in
a Kurtis-Cadillac. While trying to overtake Brero, Gregory spun off
into the hay bales lining the sides of the track. After recovering he
continued in the race now in third position. A persistent front-end
vibration as a result of his earlier mishap forced him into the pit’s
on the 22nd lap for good. (A detailed description of this race and a
photograph of Gregory and the car can be found in the January 1957
issue of Road & Track Magazine, page 24 & 25.)
Then Shipped by truck to Florida and then by boat to Nassau Island in
the Bahamas.
Dec. 7, 1956 Entered by Temple Buel and raced by Masten Gregory in the
Nassau Speed Week festival. This three day race series was fully
sanctioned by the F.I.A and counted towards both the Constructors and
Drivers World Championship Series. In the preliminary race No. 2,
Gregory wearing race No. 2 scored an outright 1st overall victory. In
his second race of the day, the Governor’s Cup Trophy Race, Gregory
still wearing race No. 2 scored an impressive 4th overall despite a
blown tire and hasty retreat into the pits for a spare.
Dec. 8, 1956 Entered by Temple Buel and raced by Masten Gregory in the
Ferrari Only Race wearing race No. 2. Gregory scored an incredible
outright 1st place overall victory narrowly beating out the 3.5 liter
Ferrari of the Marquis de Portago.
Dec. 9, 1956 Entered by Temple Buel and raced by Masten Gregory in the
Nassau Trophy Race wearing race No.2. Gregory scored an impressive
2nd overall finishing just behind Sterling Moss in his 300 S Maserati.

Feb. 24, 1957 Entered by Temple Buel and driven by Masten Gregory and
co-driven by the Scuderia Ferrari Factory Team driver Wolfgang von
Trips wearing race No. 42 to a fourth in class, 8th overall finish in
the inogural running of the Cuban Grand Prix. Trips had been schedule
to drive a new 500 TRC, however a dock strike in New York required
some creative driver reassignments. Though Luigi Chinetti’s assistance,
Gregory and car owner Temple Buel welcomed von Trips aboard as
co-driver. The two fared well through much of the race, however a
gearbox selector seal failed late in the day spraying Trips with hot
oil. (A detailed description of this race can be found in the May
1957 issue of Road & Track Magazine, pages 22-24.) (A further detailed
description and complete article on this race can be found in Forza
Magazine No. 12, August of 1998, pages 54-62. Two very detailed photos
cleary show the red painted Borrani rims still fitted to the car.)

Fall 1959 Sold by or through Carrol Shelby who was involved in a Texas
car dealership with fellow Texans, Gary Laughlin, Alan Connel, Alan
Guiberson and possibly John Mecom at various times. Purchased by Harry
Washburn of Shreevesport Louisiana. Many years later Washburns
mechanic as would Shelby himself relate a similar story of the sale of
this vehicle as well as Shelby’s earlier exploits with the car.
Washburn raced the car in much of 1959 and 1960. Initialy the car
retained it’s 2.0-liter twin cam four cylinder motor. The car was then
fitted later with a Tipo 128 C inside plug V12 motor but apparently
did not ever race with this engine due to continual overheating
problems. Washburn’s mechanics then fitted the car with a 283 cubic
inch, 283 bhp Chevrolet V8. (The original motor was rumored to have
been seen in Mexico City in the early 1960’s and has not been seen
since.) Washburn then entered the car in variety of races throughout
the South East and Central United States. Washburn had another Ferrari
also fitted with a Chevrolet V8, this was a 750 Monza, chassis 0502M
which he campaigned alongside 0652 MDTR. Durring Washburns ownership
the car also gained a fiberglass front end with a small oval grill
opening that greatly resembled his 750 Monza.

Kentucky and again driven by Bill Fuller, possibly wearing race No.
17. Raced with unknown results.

Then Sold by John Stone, Jr. to Charlie Kemp the Ferrari dealer in
Jackson, Mississippi.

Louisiana fitted with a fiberglass front end Kemp then sold the car to
John Baldwin. A full comprehensive restoration was then begun by Mike
Dopudja of Denver, Colorado. Chevrolet engine removed and a Tipo 128F
3-liter V12 (s/n 1861GT) was rebuilt to “TR” specifications and
installed. Fuel cell hidden inside original fuel tank, full fire system
